Book: ״The Last Trial: The Demjanjuk Trial and the End of Nazi Prosecution in Israel״

15 October, 2025

We are pleased to announce the publication of The Last Trial: The Demjanjuk Trial and the End of Nazi Prosecution in Israel by Dr. Yehudit Dori Deston.

The book offers a powerful account of one of the most significant legal cases in Israel’s history. In 1986, Ivan Demjanjuk stood trial in Jerusalem, accused of being “Ivan the Terrible,” the gas-chamber operator at Treblinka. After seven years of proceedings, he was acquitted. Drawing on extensive archival research in Israel, the United States, and Germany, Dr. Dori Deston uncovers new documents and examines how the limits of criminal law shape our understanding of the Holocaust and historical truth.

The book developed from Dr. Dori Deston’s doctoral dissertation at the Faculty of Law at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and received support from the Jacob Robinson Institute.
