When harrowing details of the Hamas massacre of October 7, 2023, emerged, many drew parallels to the riots in Mandatory Palestine in August 1929, when Arab mobs attacked unarmed Jews both in the streets and in their homes. Using this historical comparison, Dr. Eran Shlomi, a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Jacob Robinson Institute, gives an insight into the response of the League of Nations, the predecessor of the UN, to the 1929 riots.
