Through the biography, engagement, and scholarly production of Jewish international lawyers, the seminar examines intersections between modern Jewish history and the history of the international law discipline. It portrays international law as an arena where various, competing answers to the ‘Jewish Question’—the place of Jews in the modern world—could be inspired, formulated, debated and promoted. The seminar explores the impetus for Jewish investments, from the late 19th century forward, in international law—conceived at the time as the product of European, Christian civilisation and limited to sovereign states alone.
